1. What inspired you to write your first book?jimowen
My first book came about because my wife was dying with cancer and I thought I should write a few things down for our great-grandchildren who were not even born yet, so they could have a little idea about the fine stock they came from.  As it began to develop, she convinced me to write about my life and add a little of her in.  From there came the autobiography.

With my show, which runs eight months of the year, a thirteen-year-old daughter who is a budding basketball star, books on the market, working on songs, upkeep on a home, upkeep on cars, two great-grandchildren is a dangerous home that I must find a way to extricate them, I must write when I find time…..and there is not enough of it.

6. What advice would give to aspiring writers?listen1

To aspiring writers, I would say, “Listen to people.”  If enough people who know tell you that you are good, then you probably are.  But if enough people who know tell you you are bad, then you probably are.  Find something else you can turn that passion to.

7. What’s your favorite quote?

My favorite quote is, “Give me liberty or give me death.”  Words supposedly spoken by fellow Kentuckian Patrick Henry, but he probably did not even speak them. However, down through the past two hundred years he has used excellent publicists to further the statement as truly his.  Knowing what I’ve been able to learn of this little fireball (about 5’1″) he probably actually said, “Screw King George and the horse he rode in on.”

8. Who would you most like to have a cup of coffee with? (Dead or alive)babe ruth
Explain…

Babe Ruth.  Most people would probably guess Hank Williams because I’ve been so tied to his legend through songs, recordings, movies, etc., but my choice would be the Babe.  Always bigger than life, always looking to outdo himself.  He never worried about the other players topping him.  They could possibly do so, so it came down to whether the Babe could or not,and until age robbed him of his skills, he could.  His last homerun, in Pittsburgh, when he was fat and forty, was possibly the longest shot of his career, completely out of monstrous Forbes Field.  No one else before or since has done that.

9. What is your biggest pet peeve?
Slow drivers and stop lights.  Some people actually think stop lights are inanimate objects that operate on a set time schedule and are devoid of interest in human emotions, but I know better.   They are alive, and they have certain folk, of which I am one, that they love to irritate, frustrate and rob of their ability to concentrate.
Stop lights lie in wait, like a poison serpent, using slow, imbecile-like drivers to run necessary interference for them, then lash out at one of us of the multitude the;y hate, first flashing yellow, daring us to blast on through, then hitting red just as we reach the “no turning back” zone, and we fly through right into the waiting arms of some traffic officer in cahoots with them from the beginning.

Neither

13. Sunrises or Sunsets?eitheror

Either

My favorite place to write is Hawaii, but since I live in Missouri, it’s just too damned far to drive.

I am never happier than when I sit down to write, but it working on a book or writing a song.  It is who I am.
