Synopsis:

The Tarot predicts the journey as Ray Long comes to the town of Pettington hoping to leave his rage behind and begin a new life. And when he meets Skye Roosevelt, he begins to believe he can recreate himself and find his future in Pettington. But Pettington is no ordinary town with a metaphysical store that tells its future, a whore house that keeps it financially secure, and secrets long buried just beneath its surface. And soon Ray Long begins to spiral down into the pit of violence he has always known. He begins to hear the Devil whisper in his ear, and he soon discovers his old self is more soothing to him than the new life he’s created. And when he tries to murder two of Pettington’s own, Skye Roosevelt must search deep within herself for her own self identity in order to protect her son as Ray Long battles the past in order to separate the passion from the pain. Broken Wing is a story about an abuser who was a victim of abuse as a child. This is a story about his family relations, the need for love, the devastation of rejection, and the merry-go-round that keeps turning. And this story is about self-identity, a self-identity the character believes defines him, dark and rigid, until he is pushed to the extreme, only then can he step out and stand naked with this identity at his feet as he lays claim to the past that molded him and the passion that fills his heart.

Excerpt:

Bonnie looked up as Skye ran up the aisle toward her. Her hair was all over
the place, and she stumbled, almost falling before she slammed her body
against the counter.
“Ray took Jake,” Skye said as she leaned over and grabbed Bonnie by her
shoulders. “I need you to go with me out there to get him.”
“And so what’s the problem?” Bonnie asked as she stepped back, her voice
even and unemotional.
“I just told you.”
“But he’s Jake’s father.”
“That’s not the point,” Skye said as her voice started to climb in pitch.
“Then what is the point? I thought you trusted him.”
“Bonnie, I don’t have time for this right now, but I believe Ray has changed
in that he wants to be good for Jake’s sake. That doesn’t mean he can be. He took
Jake. Don’t you understand? He didn’t ask. He just took him.”
“Then maybe you should call the sheriff.”
“I’m beginning to think you are the most selfish person I’ve ever known,”
Skye said. “You don’t want me in your life. You never have. And you don’t care
about Jake. You only care about yourself. And what happened to the index card
on this register? How come there’s not one anymore?” Skye said even louder as
she turned around and ran back the way she’d come.
Bonnie watched Skye heading toward the door. She knew her last chance
was now, if she ever wanted to be close to the daughter who wanted her. Fate
stood behind her and shoved her forward, and Bonnie didn’t step back, but instead
screamed out, “Wait, I’ll come with you.” And she grabbed her purse and
ran down the aisle.
Skye pulled up in the dirt driveway beside the Rambler and jumped out.
Bonnie followed her and then stood on the porch as Skye ran inside. Skye tripped
over the toys as she ran toward the back of the house calling out Jake’s name.
What if Ray took off? What if he left with Jake? How would she ever find her
son? She started to panic as she ran from room to room, listening to the voices
in her head. You better get yourself a gun…People don’t change. He’s a murderer…You
don’t trust me, do you? Not even with my own son…Are you’re asking me if I forgive you
for trying to kill my friends? No, Ray, I’ll never forgive you.
Everyone battles horror as they dream of clawing and shredding against the
dark whirlpool before they’re pulled under, but those are only nightmares.
I should’ve left this town before he came back, she thought as she ran.
“Give me back my son,” Skye screamed out to a vacant room.
She ran back out the front. “He’s not there,” she cried as she ran toward the
barn, Bonnie running behind at her heels.
As she started to enter the barn, she heard Jake crying. “Jake, where are you?
Baby, come to Mommy,” she yelled out as she turned and ran across the field.
