I’m a red-blooded American woman. Translation: I’m going to try to write this opinion-piece about Season One of Hemlock Grove without thinking about the hotness of Bill Skarsgard. First thing, Bill Skarsgard is really, really, really hot. But that’s not why I LOVE Hemlock Grove….mostly.

The Basics: Hemlock Grove is a made-for-Netflix television series based on the novel, of the same name, by Brian McGreevy released in 2012. Season one is available for streaming and featured 13 episodes. During the first season we are introduced to an interesting cast of characters strongly portrayed by Famke Janssen (who looks GREAT…if not a little starved for carbs), Landon Liboiron, Dougray Scott (The Mission Impossible 2 hottie!), and Bill Skarsgard (yes…he is the younger brother of the beautiful and sexy Alexander Skarsgard from True Blood and son of the great & sexy actor Stellan Skarsgard). Bill, you had no choice but to be absolutely delicious.

The Plot: There have been two brutal murders in the sleepy Pennsylvania town of Hemlock Grove. These attacks appear to be the work of an animal. Yet, there are no tracks at either crime scene. The strange characters that inhabit this town offer a number of viable suspects. You have a Werewolf (it would be too easy if he did it, right?), the coke-snorting, chain-smoking, alcoholic, womanizing town heir Norman Godfrey (brilliantly played by Bill Skarsgard…who we won’t reduce to a piece of meat),and Norman’s enigmatic mother Olivia (who’s former husband declared in the most animated way that he had no idea what the hell she was).

The Verdict: Hemlock Grove is weird…its also pretty clear that it tries to be weird (think Twin Peaks). It’s also a little slow for television, which I’m sure works well for the book as the author develops the characters and describes the setting. I would say if you like Vampires, Werewolves, The Occult, or anything Supernatural, I would give Hemlock Grove a shot. Not only will I be tuned in for season two, I also plan to read Bill McGreevy’s novel in the near future. Enjoy!!!
